Court orders release of Vaiko, Nedumaran on bail

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A magistrate court at Saidapet here on Friday granted bail to MDMK general secretary Vaiko, Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Nedumaran and nearly 150 others.

They were arrested here on July 14 when they attempted to take out a procession to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission, demanding its closure.

The participants had assembled near the Nageswara Rao Park as they were not allowed to hold the protest in front of the diplomat's office.

The leaders had said that they could not allow the Deputy High Commission to function as the Sri Lankan Government was not respecting the UN and was working against the Tamils interests.

They were remanded to judicial custody. The magistrate ordered their release on bail. The court said they should furnish a personal bond for Rs.5000 and appear when summoned.
