Basar IIIT may be closed for inspection

Special Correspondent

Director of the institute, Officer on Special Duty resign following student's death

Officials asked to make arrangements for supplying bottled water

Body of P. Laxman, who died of diarrhoea, handed over to his parents

HYDERABAD: Technical Education Minister M. Venkata Ramana Rao has said the IIIT at Basar will be closed for a week if required for a thorough inspection of amenities. He described the death of a student in the institution on Thursday as unfortunate.

A team of officials and doctors were rushed to the campus to inquire into the reasons for the incident and submit a report. There were over 4,000 students on the campus and if food or water contamination was the reason for the student's illness, it should have affected more students, he felt.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, he said an ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh (Rs.4 lakh by the university and Rs.1 lakh by the government) would be paid to the family of the deceased.

Drinking water at present was supplied to the IIIT campus by four tankers from Vanchala. The officials would be asked to make arrangements for supply of bottled water, he added.

Normality returns

Staff Reporter from Adilabad adds: Peace returned to the IIIT campus as the authorities conceded some of the demands made by students following unrest on July 15 over the death of P. Laxman, a B.Tech. student.

As per one of the major demands made by the agitating students, the director of IIIT Basar Rajendra Sahu and Officer on Special Duty B. Narayana resigned from their posts. Among other things, they had been accused of negligence in providing proper medical treatment to ailing students. Meanwhile, the body of Laxman, who died of diarrhoea, was handed over to his parents after post mortem at the Mudhole area hospital on Friday. A round-the-clock medical camp was set up at the institution by the District Medical and Health Department.

Adilabad DMHO M. Manikya Rao, who is camping at the institution, told The Hindu that 14 students were being treated for diarrhoea while three others were being treated for symptoms of shock.
