SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS: High Court judge R. Basant releases a book, ‘Subhashithangal Chinthadalangal' by handing over a copy to former Thrissur Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy in Thrissur on Sunday. At left is Vicar General Francis Alapatt, who authored the book.

Thrissur: Kerala High Court judge R. Basant has emphasised the need to evolve secular spirituality in the country.

He was speaking after releasing ‘Subhashithangal-Chinthadalangal', a book written by Thrissur Archdiocese Vicar General Francis Alappatt, at a function here on Sunday.

“As its title indicates, the book contains the spirit of glad tidings and the light of good thoughts,” Justice Basant said.

‘Religious intolerance'

He said that such books should be widely read as the country had been going though a turbulent period characterised by religious intolerance.

“Indian polity has failed to differentiate between spirituality and religiosity. Spirituality looks into the mysteries of our own existence and interpersonal relationships. Religions have failed to fulfil their responsibilities,” he said. He released the book by handing over its first copy to Archbishop Emeritus of Thrissur Archdiocese Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy.

‘Subhashithangal-Chinthadalangal' is a collection of thoughts that Fr. Alappat had shared with his listeners through the early morning programme ‘Subhashithanagal' aired by All India Radio.

Fr. Alappat started delivering ‘Subhashithangal' on All India Radio when he was a student of the Government Medical College, Kozhikode. The book has a collection of 42 ‘Subhashithangal'.

Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences Vice-Chancellor K. Mohandas presided. M.

Madhavankutty of Thiruvambady Devaswom was also present.
