CUTTACK: Taking cognizance of plight of local Ranihat High School students from newspaper reports, an urgent sitting of the High Court was held on Sunday in which a division Bench comprising Chief Justice V. Gopalagowda and Justice Indrajeet Mahanty directed Cuttack district administration to remove the sheltered slum dwellers from the school premises and facilitate running of the school from Monday. The High Court however, asked the administration to relocate the evicted slum dwellers by Sunday evening temporarily at nearby Hadia Patha, an island inside River Mahanadi by providing them shelter , and free food till July 27; the date on which the petition of the slum dwellers is scheduled to be heard next. It may be mentioned here that following the High Court order on July 6 and 7, the administration had provided shelter to the evicted families at Ranihat High School and the classes of over 1,600 students of the school were suspended since July 9. On July 16, some students of the school resented over their classes remaining suspended for so many days. They squatted on the main road in front of their school and studied to register their protest in a unique manner. Viewing the grievance of the students as “genuine”, the Chief Justice decided to hold the special court on a holiday inside his chamber on Sunday and had noticed the concerned advocates, including the State Advocate General to attend the urgent sitting of the court. Even the District Magistrate and the Commissioner of local civic body were summoned to remain present during adjudication of the case. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the district administration immediately swung into action and took measures to shift the slum dwellers to the new place.
