‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa' to be held from Saturday

All waterfalls witness heavy inflow since Sunday night following incessant drizzle

TIRUNELVELI: This year's edition of ‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa 2010,' to be held at Courtallam for eight days from July 24, will host a range of competitions for tourists and students. Cultural troupes from various parts of the State will enthral visitors.

According to Collector M. Jayaraman, Minister for Tourism N. Suresh Rajan will inaugurate the festival in the presence of Ministers K.R. Periyakaruppan, T.P.M. Maideen Khan, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, MPs and MLAs.

‘Isai Sangamam' will be presented by students of Government Music School and variety entertainment by students of Sri Vadivudaiyamman Natyaalaya.

Highlight of the first day will be the presentation by ‘Asaththapovathu yaaru' troupe members. ‘Mr. Courtallam' (at 2.30 p.m. on July 25), rangoli (at 10.30 a.m. on July 27), fashion parade and chubby baby contests (at 10.30 a.m. on July 28) and dog show (at 2 p.m. on July 29) will be conducted at Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam.

Roller skating contest will be conducted near Hilton Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Old Courtallam on July 26 at 3 p.m. while swimming competitions in various categories organised in the swimming pool near Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam will be held on July 30 at 3 p.m.

On the last day of the festival (on July 31), boat race will be conducted in the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Boat Club at Vennamadaikulam on the Main Falls–Five Falls stretch.

Those who wish to participate in these competitions should register their names with The Manager, Hotel Tamil Nadu, Courtallam (04633 – 283003), or with the District Sports Officer, Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai (0462 – 2572632).

“Winners will receive prizes to be handed over by the chief guests at functions to be held everyday,” Dr. Jayaraman said.

Meanwhile, all waterfalls at Courtallam witnessed heavy inflow since Sunday night following incessant drizzle in the Western Ghats.

Tourists were allowed to take bath only at safer points of Main Falls from Sunday and the flood subsided slightly after 9 a.m. The drizzle also brought heavy inflow into Five Falls, Old Falls and Tiger Falls, where the tourists were allowed to take bath.

The Paanaratheertham Falls in the Papanasam Dam was flowing dangerously till Monday afternoon and the tourists were not allowed to go near it.
