Special Correspondent

New appointment: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan greeting Jannat Hussain in the city on Monday.

HYDERABAD: Senior IAS officer and Special Chief Secretary Jannat Hussain took charge as the new Chief Information Commissioner of the State.

Mr. Jannat Hussain was administered the oath by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan on Monday.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, Chief Secretary S.V. Prasad, Special Chief Secretary (GAD) Rajeev Sharma, Information Commissioners R. Dileep Reddy, K. Sudhakar Rao and A. Subba Rao, MP and advisor to the State government K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao were present.

The new CIC told The Hindu that RTI Act was a revolutionary act introduced by the Centre to ensure transparency in the government.

Stating that he would study the Act in detail for making himself acquainted with the processes involved, he asserted that efforts would be made to make Andhra Pradesh a model State for others in the implementation of the RTI.

Meanwhile, the Forum for Good Governance, an NGO, filed a writ petition in the AP High Court challenging the appointment. The Forum said that the RTI Act stipulates that the CIC should not be an MP, MLA or hold any other office of profit.

Mr. Hussain was Special Chief Secretary on the day his name was considered by the government and accepted by the Governor.
