Court allows Centre to take over Bhopal trust, hospital

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday permitted the Centre to take over the management of the Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust (BMHT) and its hospital set up for the victims of the 1984 gas tragedy.

Attorney-General G.E. Vahanvati said the hospital would be run by the Department of Biotechnology. The Department of Atomic Energy would also coordinate in BMHT management.

A Bench of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and Swatanter Kumar also accepted the resignation of the former CJI, Justice A. M. Ahmadi, as BMHT chairman.

Justice Ahmadi, who was appointed chairman on May 15, 1998, sought to be relieved of his post in 2008 and reiterated his request on June 20, 2009.

The Bench placed on record the services he rendered to the Trust and the hospital for the past 12 years.

It directed the Centre to take over the hospital after winding up the Trust immediately.
