CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation is in the process of procuring compactors and specially designed garbage bins to clear solid waste from nearly 150 km of bus route roads in the four zones now being handled by Neel Metal Fanalca, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Wednesday. Speaking after a function to hand over two excavator grappler hooks costing Rs.94 lakh and two road rollers purchased at a cost of Rs.20.60 lakh, he said the additional requirements for the four zones include around 5,000 conservancy staff, 120 compactors and 3,500 bins. Orders have been placed with a firm in Germany for around 2,000 bins. They would reach Chennai by the end of next month, he said. Similarly, orders have been placed for procuring 40 big compactors. The quote submitted by a company for supplying 31 compactors would be placed for approval before the Council. “We are waiting for the equipment to arrive to begin recruitment of personnel in areas under the control of Neel Metal Fanalca,” Mr.Subramanian said. Following complaints of uncleared garbage on roads and residential areas, the civic body decided to take over the conservancy work in the Pulianthope, Adyar, Ice House and Kodambakkam zones that are presently with the company. The Mayor said in the last four years the Corporation had taken steps to modernise garbage clearance in the city.
