KOLLAM: The intelligence wing of the Commercial Taxes Department seized a lorry-load of foreign goods here on Thursday. E. Kamaruddin, Deputy Commissioner (Intelligence) of the department, said the imported electronic items, for which tax was not paid, were being transported from the Thiruvananthapuram airport to Kozhikode. He said the seizure was made during routine patrolling to detect tax evasion. Patrolling had been intensified as tax evasions were likely to go up in the days leading to the Onam season. While the lorry was waved down, the driver brought it to a halt, but he and the cleaner escaped in a following vehicle. The police were alerted and the lorry was taken to the Kollam East Police Station complex. The goods were being transported in various addresses. Some of the parcels could be meant for bona fide addresses, but most appeared to carry bogus addresses, destined for duty-free shops. Mr. Kamaruddin said a preliminary estimate valued the seized goods at Rs.11 lakh, which meant a tax evasion of Rs.1.5 lakh.
