Ghaziabad gets gas distribution network

Sandeep Joshi

NEW DELHI: Neighbouring Ghaziabad city on Thursday got its own gas distribution system set up by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), providing compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles and piped natural gas (PNG) for homes.

“IGL has ambitious plans worth Rs.500 crore to spread CNG and PNG in the entire city. Plans have also been prepared for laying about 720 km of gas pipelines covering various areas of Ghaziabad,” said Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada after inaugurating the service.

He also asked the U.P. Government to keep CNG and PNG free from value added tax (VAT) so that prices of these products would remain at par with Delhi.

Mr. Prasada said IGL has laid a special 20-km pipeline for this project, and to meet future needs there are plans to lay a 50-km pipeline by March 2011 and a 40-km additional pipeline by March 2012 so that Ghaziabad receives gas for CNG supply to vehicles, PNG supply to households and also for the industrial and commercial units in the city.

380-km pipeline

The Minister said IGL has laid a 380-km pipeline network in the areas of Kaushambi, Surya Nagar, Ramprastha, Vaishali, Chander Nagar, Rampuri, Vasundhara, Sahibabad, Indirapuram, Shalimar Garden, Rajendra Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Shalimar Garden Extension, DLF and Brij Vihar in Ghaziabad. About 1,500 domestic consumers have been provided with PNG connections at Kaushambi, Surya Nagar, Ramprastha and Vaishali.

Also, Chander Nagar, Rampuri, Vasundhara, Sahibabad, Indirapuram, Shalimar Garden, Rajendra Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Shalimar Garden Extension, DLF and Brij Vihar areas of Ghaziabad are expected to be given PNG connectivity by October this year, Mr. Prasada added.
