FBV urges Minister not to contest NEAA order

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Forum for Better Visakha convener E.A.S. Sarma has urged Union Minister of State for Environment & Forests Jairam Ramesh not to contest the National Environment Appellate Authority's (NEAA) judgment on the proposed NCC thermal power project in Sompeta in any higher court.

It may be recalled that on July 14, the NEAA quashed the Environment Clearance given for the 2,440 MW thermal power project on a petition filed by the FBV convener.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests had despatched a four-member expert team led by Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangalore, K. Subhakar Reddy, on July 19 to study the ground situation.

“If this order of NEAA is not contested, thousands of small farmers and fishing communities will feel reassured of retaining their livelihoods and spared from the pollution to be caused by the proposed power plant,” Mr. Sarma said in a letter to the Minster.
