Neelotpal in sole lead

HYDERABAD: Top-seeded GM Neelotpal Das emerged sole leader with seven points at the end of penultimate round of the Rs. 2.30 lakh prize money ONGC all-India FIDE-rated chess championship at Sri Vasavi Engineering College (Tadepalligudem) on Saturday.

Neelotpal had an easy outing in the eighth round against J. Maleswara Rao (AP) to take the lead with seven points. Playing with white pieces in Sicilian Defence, the Andhra player blundered his queen in the opening itself to hand full point to his fancied rival in just 14 moves.

Overnight leaders IMs K. Ratnakaran and C. Praveen Kumar of Railways settled for quick draws while C.R.G. Krishna held fourth-seed IM B.T. Murali Krishnan in the eighth round.

Ratnakaran, Praveen Kumar and C.R.G. Krishna along with IM D.P. Singh and Pradip Ghosh are now trailing behind the leader by half-a-point each.
