Media to support anti-liquor agitation

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Representatives of the print and electronic media on Saturday pledged their support to the anti-liquor agitation to be taken by the ‘Madhya Niyantrana Udyama Committee'. They were speaking at a round-table conference on the role of the media in the anti-liquor agitation organised by the committee.

Justice A. Lakshmana Rao, former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, who presided, criticised the government for allowing free sale of liquor the consumption of which severely affected people's health, economic status and family life. He called upon the media to evolve a wider campaign to educate people about the ill-effects of consuming liquor.

V. Lakshmana Reddy, president of the committee, said the agitation would be apolitical with a view to bringing about a change in society. He wanted the media to highlight the location of liquor shops near schools, temples and residential areas and on highways. He favoured steps by the media not to encourage drinking of liquor.

K. Srinivas Reddy, secretary-general, Indian Journalists' Union, and several representatives of the print and electronic media spoke.
