Tirupati gears up for music fete

68th annual Sri Thyagaraja Festival of Music and Dance to begin today



cultural treat: K.V. Ranganathan, executive chairman of Sri Thyagaraja Festival Committee, announces the schedule of the music festival in Tirupati.

TIRUPATI: Carnatic music lovers are in for an aural treat from this Sunday, when the 68th annual Sri Thyagaraja Festival of Music and Dance will be conducted at Sri Thyagaraja Mandapam in a colourful manner. Former Executive Officer of TTD and principal secretary to the Governor, N.Ramesh Kumar, will inaugurate the festival.

Fifty veteran singers as well as upcoming artistes will perform during the eleven-day marathon event, including the who's who of Carnatic music like Bombay Sisters, Priya Sisters, Swetharanyam Sisters, Tirupati Sisters, Rudrapatnam Brothers, Bengaluru Ravikiran, T.M.Krishna, R.N.S.Saileswari, Soumyasri Varadarajan, besides instrumentalists Geeta Krishnamurthy (Veena), Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar (flute) and N.Ganesh (Carnatic Santoor).

Announcing this at a media conference here, the trust chairman K.V. Ranganathan and treasurer V.S. Narasimhachari said that Chennai-based industrialist Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty would take part in the ‘Sadas' on August 1 and confer the title ‘Saptagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani' on vocalist T.V.Gopalakrishnan, violinist M.S.Anantaraman and Mrudangam exponent Vellore Ramabhadran.

Former legislative Speaker A. Eswara Reddi will honour M. Krishnaswamy, chairman of Sri Thyagaraja Trust, with the title ‘Sangeeta Seva Durandhara'.
