NFCL shows the way

B.V.S. Bhaskar

It sets apart 70 per cent of its area for afforestation

As many as four lakh saplings, comprising 170 species, have been planted

As part of the green belt, the NFCL has developed animal and bird enclosures

KAKINADA: It is rare for an industry in the private sector going in for massive afforestation and earmarking more than 70 per cent of its area for a green belt and maintaining an ecological system above the prescribed parameters.

But, the Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (NFCL) here has done it.

After crossing the main gate, one can see lush green areas around the urea production plant. As one enters the green belt, it is like stepping into a thick forest.

As many as four lakh saplings, comprising 170 species, have been planted, transforming the highly saline and marshy area into a lush green forest, which has a rich flora and fauna between the factory and Kakinada town.

The development of one-km-wide green belt is an integral part of the overall natural ecological system consisting of 11 water bodies for fish, habitat for animal life and sanctuary for migratory birds with the factory nestled in the most natural and idyllic surroundings.

NFCL Chairman K.S. Raju says: “We believe that industry should exist in harmony with nature.

In pursuance of this belief, an effort has been made to create a complete ecological system in and around the factory.

Creation of this ecological system is our humble contribution to the mother Nature.”

Deer park

As part of the green belt, the NFCL team has developed animal and bird enclosures, which attracts all age group of people, particularly children. A deer park with about 100 spotted deer and separate enclosures for birds, rabbits and certain other animals have also been added. As part of animal conservation, some of these animals are also being let out freely under certain conditions.

Apart from this, a full-fledged nursery with mist chamber and sprinkler irrigation system has been developed for supply of plants to the afforestation programme.

Zero discharge of liquid effluent outside the complex, reduction of emissions, reduction of effluent generation, water conservation systems and control of liquid effluent generation are some of the eco-friendly measures adopted in Urea Plant.
