Young talents spice up cultural festival

TIRUCHI: An air of festivity prevailed on the opening day of the inter-departmental SRC Cult Fest ‘10 organised by the students union of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in the city on Friday.

The two-day festival kicked off with events for the discerning mind. Extempore in Tamil and English, elocution in Hindi and Sanskrit, Tamil poetry and Bible recitation punctuated the forenoon session. The ‘hair do' competition ensured that innovative and elegant hairstyles were paraded. Face painting and flower arrangement brought dainty artistry to the fore Classical dancing and instrumental music thrilled connoisseurs while the cookery contest was a treat for culinary enthusiasts.

The afternoon session was spiced up with the fusion dance event as folk, western and classical music blended into a unique chord. More events such as mime , mehandi, comedy track, rangoli, ‘as you like it,' ‘art out of waste,' folk dance, jam, Thirukkural, ad-mad and Dumb ‘c' were held on the second day. ‘Brain blast' is a signature event of the college that requires all departments to showcase comprehensive academic projects.

“The University Grants Commission (UGC) has provided a lot of encouragement to come up with such projects,” said Kanaka Bhashyam, principal of the college while speaking to The Hindu. A.Kaliyamurthy, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, in his inaugural address, advised students to maintain a positive frame of mind. He also stressed on the importance of hard work in achieving success. R.Pachapakesan, managing trustee of the college, presided over.
