CHANDIGARH: In a suspected case of “honour” killing, a couple in Hoshiarpur allegedly electrocuted their daughter and tried to set afire her lover who is now battling for life in a hospital. Police officials said Sher Singh and his wife Paramjeet Kaur had gone to Jammu for collecting a certificate of their daughter from Jammu University and were scheduled to return on Saturday, but happened to come back home early on Friday evening. After finding his 20-year-old daughter with her boyfriend, Sher Singh strangled her to death and tried to kill the youth, Gagandeep Singh by burning him in his car after beating him. According to Dasuya police station SHO Balbir Singh, the youth tried to run away on seeing the girl's parents but couldn't get away. In another case of “honour” killing at Mahilpur, also in Hoshiarpur district, a brother allegedly murdered his sister as she had been “going around with some local boys.” Mahilpur SHO Prem Kumar said the girl's father, Surinder Kaushal, had lodged a report at the police station regarding his daughter's disappearance. The police launched a probe and the girl's body was recovered from a canal a few days back. It is suspected that the girl was strangled to death by her brother, Munny Partap Kaushal, on June 30 and the body was then thrown into the canal. “During the interrogation, he [Kaushal] broke down and confessed his crime. He said that Kanchan was bringing a bad name to the family as she was going around with a couple of boys and therefore he killed her,” Mr. Kumar said.
