Uthappa aiming for CL comeback

Bangalore: In recent times, Robin Uthappa has quickly slumped from the ecstasy of big hits to the agony of being in pain.

After slamming 374 runs at an enviable strike-rate of 171.55 for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League during April, Uthappa was expected to re-ignite his comeback dreams and add on to the tally of 38 ODIs and nine Twenty20 Internationals.

However, a sore right shoulder laid him low and he was soon winging his way to London for corrective surgery. In the past few weeks, Uthappa has worked hard on his rehabilitation stint at the National Cricket Academy and he believes that the results have been heartening.

The aggressive 24-year-old opener is hoping to be fully fit in time for the Champions League in South Africa from September 10 to 26.

An optimistic Uthappa said: “The recovery is coming along well. In fact I am three weeks ahead in terms of recovery.

“We did some tests here (NCA) and I did fairly well in them. It is just eight weeks since I had the surgery and I am happy with the way I have made progress.

“In fact I have knocked around a bit with the bat and the strength is coming back to my shoulder. If all goes well I might have a chance of playing in the Champions League. That would be good.”

The RCB management too is hoping that Uthappa's race towards fitness will yield the desired results ahead of the Champions League. — Special Correspondent
