First generation students take over 53 p.c. of seats

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Over 53 per cent of the seats, allotted in engineering counselling this year until Monday, have been taken by first generation graduate students, who can avail themselves of the tuition fee waiver scheme announced by the State government.

The response has reduced the number of absentees this year: 22.38 per cent absentees recorded out of 82,263 students called for counselling compared to 26.93 per cent absentees for the same number of students called last year.

V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2010, said there were fewer first generation graduate students among the absentees (4,260) this year compared to last year (8,844). Of the 1.67 lakh applications received by the authorities for counselling, 78,000 (46.71 per cent) were from first generation graduate student candidates.

“This is a positive sign as other students who are the first graduates in the family will be encouraged to continue higher education,” he said.

The second phase of counselling ends on July 31.
