In-service training for matriculation teachers

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The Department of School Education will impart in-service training next month to matriculation school teachers handling standards I and VI, to expose them to the methodology of handling new textbooks provided under ‘equitable system of education', official sources said.

The short training programmes conceptualised by the Directorate of Teacher Education, Research and Training (DTERT) will be carried out with experts drawn from the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) and authors of the new text books.

Even as the new text books introduced for the two levels have attracted students owing to an integration of attractive pictures and graphics into the content, the need for introducing the concept of in-service training for matriculation school teachers has arisen since there is a general perception among teachers that chapters are limited in number.

Having handled voluminous content, the teachers tend to think that the duration of one year is lengthy for the prescribed number of chapters.

Methodology matters

However, the methodology mattered a lot in the new system, according to the Inspector of Matriculation Schools V. Jeyakumar.

How well a student learns the prescribed chapters is more important than the number of chapters learnt, he said, explaining that the training programmes will enable teachers to adapt to the new situation and modify their attitude creating the right environment for students to broaden their horizons. The training will cover both the approach towards teaching-learning and guidance for evaluation.

There will be more emphasis on practical learning and project work in the equitable system of education, Mr. Jeyakumar said.

In-service training programmes for matriculation school teachers are expected to be a continuous process henceforth, since the rest of the levels till standard X will come under the new system from the next academic year, he said, adding that private school managements will have to necessarily accord ‘on duty' sanction for their teachers to attend the training.

Since the training programme will be staggered for different subjects, schools will not face difficulty in sending teachers.
