Poor facilities:Tamil Nadu Assembly Petitions Committee Chairman Kovai Thangam (left), interacting with students at Adi Dravida Girls Hostel in Kodaikanal on Wednesday. KODAIKANAL: The Tamil Nadu Assembly Petitions Committee will recommend to the district administration to enhance facilities including toilet amenities at Adi Dravida Hostels in the hill station, said Kovai Thangam, Chairman of the committee. He and other members S. Pushparaj, N. Subramanian, E.S.S. Raman, inspected both girls and boys hostels under the control of the Department of Adi Dravida Welfare here on Wednesday. To begin with, the committee inspected the girls' hostel near panchayat union office and interacted with girl students. The committee members came to know that rice was served in the morning instead of breakfast. Later, the warden explained that ‘uppuma' and ‘kichadi' were provided twice a week in the morning. With no wet grinder, other breakfast items could not be prepared. The chairman ordered officials to provide a wet grinder to prepare ‘idlis' and ‘dhosas The State Government had issued a Government Order one year back to provide breakfast to students, he pointed out. Food should be served to inmates as per government guidelines. He cautioned that disciplinary action against the officials would be taken if they fail to adhere to the prescribed guidelines. When a group of girls deplored that they could not got to school during rainy season and appealed to provide umbrella, the chairman immediately handed over a cash of Rs.3,000 to a senior most student in the hostel on the spot and advised her to buy 34 umbrellas for all inmates and use the rest of the amount to buy note books and other stationery items. Later, the team visited the boys' hostel, functioning in rental building on M.M. Street and expressed grave concern over its pathetic condition. They were irked on seeing the window doors without glass panes, torn carpet and tattered mats and decade old dirty building. He recommended the officials to improve the amenities in the hostel. The hostel has one bathroom and three toilets for 36 inmates. He ordered to construct more number of toilets within 15 days. Officials informed that construction of a new building was on and the students would shift to the new building soon. The committee came to Kodaikanal last night. The chairman and members will conduct review meeting at the Collectorate on Thursday.
