Saranya, Mohana Priya in joint lead

CHENNAI: J. Saranya of Tiruvallur and J. Mohana Priya of Kanchi emerged joint leaders with 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round of the IOB TN-State Junior (girls) chess championship here on Wednesday.

In the boys' category, N. Surendran of St. Joseph's Engineering College beat M. Muthu Alagappan of Thiruvallur to take the joint lead along with Bavankumar of Bloom Chess Academy and Harihara Sudan of T. Nagar Chess Academy.

Girls: P. Michelle Catherina (CHE) 5 lost to J. Saranya (TVLR) 6.5, J. Mohana Priya (KAN) 6.5 bt A. Akshaya (TVLR) 5, U. Ashwini (CHE) 6 bt M. Mahalakshmi (CHE) 4.5, P.V. Nandhidhaa (NAM) 5.5 bt P. Bala Kannamma (CHE) 4.5, G.K. Monnisha (CHE) 4 lost to N. Hema Priya (CHE) 5.

Big win for Stella Maris

Stella Maris College beat S.S. Shasun Jain College by 10 goals to nil while Ethiraj and MOP Vaishnav figured in a 0-0 draw on the opening day of the Chennai District Women's Hockey Association league for schools and colleges at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Wednesday. The theme of this year's league is “Save Hockey Our National Game.”

The league this year is sponsored by the Rotary Club of K.K. Nagar. Mr. A.P. Khanna, Chairman of RI District Conference (K.K. Nagar) inaugurated the championship in the presence of Ramagopal and Anandaraj of K.K. Nagar Rotary Club.

Mandlekar advances

Fifth seed Tushar Mandlekar (Chattisgarh) shocked the top seed Sai Reddy (AP) 6-1 6-1 in the boys singles U-18 quarterfinals on Wednesday in the Taxsmile AITA talent series tennis tournament being held here.

Vijayaraghavan and Kailasam pair wins

S. Vijayaraghavan and S. Kailasam won with a score of 62.34 percent playing East-West in the TNSC weekly bridge tournament, here. Laxmi Chari and Sherien Ryan were the North-South winners, with a score of 59.29 percent.

Football tournament

The Smt. Prabha Jaidev memorial football tournament for boys will be organised by the DAV group of schools at its Mogappair campus from August 2 to 7.

Wesley HSS (Royapettah), PSBB-K.K. Nagar, St. Patrick's Anglo-Indian HSS (Adyar), St Michael's Academy (Adyar), SBOA School and Junior College (Anna Nagar) and Don Bosco HSS (Perambur) are among the 32 schools participating, apart from the six DAV school teams.
