Free software meet held

Staff Reporter

Student community introduced to various applications of free softwares.

Kochi: The Vocational Higher Secondary School (VHSS) at Irimpanam, near Thripunithura, held its second ‘Swathanthra Software Koottayma' (free software collective) at the school premises on Wednesday evening.

Free software activist Vimal Joseph introduced the concept of free software and cited the localisation of Tux Paint — a free and open source bitmap graphics editor for children — with a Malayalam interface as the biggest achievement so far of the school's Swathanthra Software Koottayma (SSK).

“Whereas the customised version of Tux Paint can be used by the entire student community, proprietary softwares do not allow such options,” he said. “Hardware cannot be copied, but copying as well as sharing is possible in the case of softwares. The quality of software is not lost when it is copied as it is another form of knowledge, and sharing of knowledge is the culture of our society,” he said.

Thomas Yoyak, the school's IT coordinator, introduced some prominent educational applications in GNU/Linux. He gave demonstrations on ‘Celestia', an educational application for geography which facilitates study of astronomy; ‘Kanagram' , an application for vocabulary development in English; ‘Kgeography', which aids study of maps; and ‘Ktechlab', an application for making a range of electronic circuits, from the most simple to the highly complex.

The school's mathematics teacher, Bejoy Mathai, introduced ‘DrGeo', an application for making geometrical shapes; and ‘Geogebra', an application for analytic geometry. Sameer Mohammed Thahir of Indian Libre User group-Cochin; School manager M. I. Andrews, and Principal V. A. Thampy participated in the event.
