Mumbai: Extradited gangster Abu Salem, a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai blast, on Friday alleged that an escort policeman had threatened to kill him.
Salem who was produced before the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) judge, moved an application to this effect. Salem's lawyer Sudeep Pasbola said assistant police inspector (API) Rajendra Chaphekar threatened him “with dire consequences,” when the accused was being taken to a government hospital for treatment.
Last weekend, Salem sustained injuries when he was attacked by another accused, Mustafa Dossa, with a sharp spoon. His wounds were dressed on Friday.
“Demanded bribe”
In his application, Salem alleged that Mr. Chaphekar demanded a bribe for getting him treated and used “unparliamentary words.”
Salem also claimed Mr. Chaphekar threatened him with an encounter.
Asked to file replies
The court directed Mr. Chaphekar and the Superintendent of Taloja prison, where Salem is currently housed, to file their replies on August 23.
Following the court order, Salem would be treated at the hospital in Taloja.
