State to review scholarships every 3 months

GUNTUR: The State government will review the various scholarships and fee reimbursement schemes every three months on the basis of report submitted by the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to monitor the schemes, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah announced here on Saturday.

“It (submission of the report) is a continuous process and every eligible student belonging to weaker sections would get scholarships,” Mr. Rosaiah said.

Referring to instances of misuse of the scheme, the Chief Minister said, “some students are getting four scholarships at a time. The sub-committee will look into these issues''.

He was addressing students of Acharya Nagarjuna University after unveiling the pylons marking the inauguration of an open air theatre, Chemistry Block, Yoga Center and the extended blocks of girl's hostel.

The programme was marred by protests by students belonging to All India Student Federation and Progressive Democratic Students Organisation who raised slogans against the government on the scholarship issue.

Even as police appeared clueless, the students ran down the stairs and reached the barricades. They were later evicted from the complex.

Mr. Rosaiah acknowledged the efforts of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in setting up 15 new universities in the State. “It is equally important to provide adequate infrastructural facilities, fill up the vacancies in teaching and non-teaching departments. It is a constitutional obligation on the part of government to provide all these facilities,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor Y.R. Haragopal Reddy, former V-C V. Balmohan Das, and others were present.

Later, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 6.3 crore drinking water scheme at Auto Nagar and commissioned the second pipe line supplying drinking water at Takkelapadu village.
