Flood threat in Surpur taluk

2.81 lakh cusecs of water released from Narayanpur dam on Friday

Running out of time:The construction of houses

BANDOLLI (YADGIR DISTRICT): People of several villages in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district are facing the threat of floods with the water-level in the Krishna and its tributaries rising alarmingly following release of water from the Alamatti reservoir in Bagalkot and the Narayanpur dam in Surpur.

On Friday, the authorities released 2.81 lakh cusecs of water from the Narayanpur dam into the river.

This comes when the devastation caused by the floods just 11 months ago is still fresh in their minds. The villages that were affected last year may be submerged this time also if the water-level in the Krishna and its tributaries continues to rise.

“We do not know where to go if floodwaters enter our village this time,” Shantavva, a Dalit woman from Havinal village, said. This village was surrounded by floodwaters last year and remained cut off from the rest of the district for five days. The authorities concerned are yet to provide houses in a safe place for the people of the Dalit colony in Havinal village on the banks of the Hirehalla stream, where the water-level is rising. Houses are not ready for the people of Bandolli and Thinthani villages either.
