Double death sentence for murder of kid

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: Sessions judge of the Mahila Court K.Ashokan on Friday awarded double death sentence to Sundararajan (25) of Samayapuram, besides seven years' rigorous imprisonment, all to run concurrently, on charges of abduction and murder of seven-year-old K.Suresh of Karkoodal in Vriddhachalam district.

The judge acquitted Balayee of Sengunam in Ariyalur district, of all charges.

Suresh, a Class II student, was returning from school on July 27, 2009 when Sundararajan, riding a motorcycle, approached and told him that his grandmother had been hospitalised in serious condition. Suresh went with Sundararajan.

When his mother Maheswari started searching for Suresh his classmate told her that he had gone with Sundararajanabout. She soon received an anonymous call demanding ransom of Rs.5 lakh for the boy's release.

Ms. Maheswari (whose husband Kolanjinathan is abroad) filed a complaint with the Khammavaram police. The police traced Sundararajan. During interrogation he confessed that as ransom was denied he strangulated the boy, put the body in a gunny bag and dumped it in a tank at Vayalapadi in Perambalur district.

The acquitted Balayee is a distant relative of Ms. Maheswari and it was through her that Sundararajan came to know about Mr. Kolanjinathan's family.

The judge slapped two death sentences — one for abduction and another for murder — and seven years' rigorous imprisonment for tampering with the evidence.
