But the victim and her mother carried on the legal battle
IMPHAL: A man, who was pronounced guilty of rape, was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on Saturday after a protracted legal battle lasting 18 years.
Prosecution case
The prosecution case was that Okram Premjit, an autorickshaw driver, in 1992 came across the victim, who was waiting for a taxi or bus to return to her village at Patsoi, about 15 km away from Imphal.
Premjit volunteered to take her to her village.
In her complaint to the police, the victim said that she was repeatedly raped by Premjit the same night and the following morning.
But the autorickshaw driver was released on bail five days later.
Undeterred, the victim and her widowed mother continued to fight for justice which they finally got.
