COIMBATORE: Details of the list of branches and banks for exchange of soiled notes and availability of coins in every city should be available on the website of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In a memorandum to a committee of the RBI on customer service recently, K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the banks should communicate change in interest rates through SMS or email to customers and not just through advertisements. The charges for return of cheques should be uniform in all banks. The ATMs should have the facility to reject fake notes. In the case of bank customers taking insurance cover for free or for deduction from the bank account, a copy of the master insurance policy should be given to the beneficiaries. Any debit made by a bank, except the routine interest, should be informed to the customer through SMS or email. Cheque return charges should not be collected from the beneficiaries of the cheque. The objective was to review the existing system of attending to customer service in banks, evaluate the existing grievance redressal mechanism in banks and recommend measures to expedite resolution of complaints, examine functioning of the banking ombudsman schemeaccording to an RBI release.
