MYSORE: People made a beeline for Chamundi Hills at the crack of dawn on Sunday to participate in the annual Chamundeshwari Vardanti Utsava which was celebrated with fervour and gaiety.

Reckoned to be the birthday of the Goddess, the daylong event attracted common people as also VIPs, including Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and BJP State unit president K.S. Eshwarappa.

The start

The beat of the traditional musical ensemble and chanting of the hymns reached a crescendo to signal the commencement of the event that drew pilgrims from across the State.

The serpentine road leading to the hill top came to life as early as 4 a.m. when the rituals associated with the festival commenced. In view of the unending stream of visitors, the temple was kept open throughout the day. Volunteers distributed sweets to the devotees. The Chief Minister, who had camped in the city since Saturday night, left for Shimoga after participating in the celebrations.

Believed to be one of the seven sacred hills of India, Chamundi Hills attracted more than one crore people last year.
