Bagalkot: Minor Irrigation Minister and district in-charge Govind Karjol has given an assurance that Rs. 14 lakh will be provided under MP, MLA and MLC funds to develop the new building of the Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum.

Speaking after inaugurating the new building here on Saturday, he said that in the last five years the forum had solved 98 cases and had provided Rs.1.35 crore as compensation to consumers.

Awareness programmes

He also said that instead of confining the activities of the forum to city limits, sustained efforts should be made to create awareness about consumer rights in rural areas. The officers concerned should conduct awareness programmes in villages at regular intervals.

District Judge H.B. Prabhakar Shastri said that owing to lack of awareness about the Consumer Protection Act, consumers were easily exploited in the market.

People should cooperate with the authorities concerned in conducting awareness campaigns in remote areas.

Detailing the provisions under the Act, Karnataka State Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum chairman K Ramanna said that programmes should be conducted at hobli levels to create awareness from the grassroots level.

Advocates Basavaprabhu Hoskeri, B.S. Chegreddi and Vishwanath Reddi, and Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Department K.S. Kallangoudar were present.
