Singer B.K. Sumitra inaugurating the competition of devotional and traditional songs in Shimoga on Sunday.

SHIMOGA: Noted singer B.K. Sumitra regretted here on Sunday that the melody of the devotional and traditional songs was losing its identity in the cacophony and thunder of the western music.

She was inaugurating the competition in the devotional and traditional songs organised by the Geleyara Balaga of Bhadravati on the eve of the forthcoming Naga Panchami and Gouri Ganesh festivals.

‘Target youth'

She emphasised the need for encouraging devotional and traditional songs among the youths so that they could appreciate their greatness.

She explained the difference between the devotional and traditional songs and the modern and western music with her recitation. Singer and Winner of the Shishunal Sherief Award Gartikere Raghanna who was the chief guest regaled the gathering with his rendition of the devotional songs of Shishunal Sherief. Secretary of the National Education Society S.V. Thimmaiah said it was unfortunate that the religion was being interpreted in a narrow and sectarian manner. He said that the religion, which was the style of everybody's life should not enter politics and suggested that religious practices should be based on tradition.
