PANAJI: The rift in the Congress-led coalition in the State came out into the open on Saturday with the Goa unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the drug peddler-police-politician nexus. The NCP's demand was made at the maiden meeting of the newly constituted State Executive Committee headed by Minister for Revenue Jose Philip D'Souza. With this demand, the Opposition BJP members have been repeatedly disrupting the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly. The three-member strong NCP has two Ministers in the Digambar Kamat Government. Declined The Chief Minister has declined to accede to the Opposition's demand stating that the Goa Crime Branch, entrusted with the investigation, had been doing a good job. The Minister said that the truth should be made known to the people of the State and that he would raise the issue at the next Cabinet meeting. Alleged Last week, the former Tourism Minister and NCP legislator Mickky Pacheco alleged that he lost his post following his letter to the Chief Minister demanding a CBI probe into the drug case and the alleged multi-crore State excise scam. Mr. Pacheco attended the Assembly proceedings last week after he was released on bail in the Nadia Torrado unnatural death case. Mr. Pacheco, who resigned following the police probe into the case, accused Mr. Kamat of misleading the NCP leaders in Delhi and putting pressure on them to compel Mr. Pacheco to resign.
