New Delhi: Eight persons were killed as heavy rain lashed most parts of North India for yet another day on Sunday with Uttarakhand bearing the brunt of it as a record 48-hour downpour in the hill State threw normal life out of gear washing out several roads and affecting traffic.

While incessant showers claimed six lives in Uttarakhand, two persons died in rain-related incidents across neighbouring Uttar Pradesh where major rivers continued to swell creating flood-like situation in various districts, official sources said.

Heavy rains which began to lash Dehra Dun on Friday morning submerged houses in various localities and left the streets waterlogged before ceasing today.

Several important roads were washed out in the 48 hours of rains which broke a 44-year-old record, official sources said.

A vital stretch of Raipur-Chamba Road was also washed away due to heavy floods in the river Song in Dehra Dun. HESCO Gaon, a model village in Shuklapur area, was also hit badly by floods in the river Asan.

Authorities have issued an alert to nearby border districts of Muzaffarnagar and Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh after the Ganga crossed the danger level in Haridwar yesterday inundating a large number of villages in the district and destroying crops.

However, officials in Dehra Dun said water levels in major rivers including the Ganga have started receding since the rain has stopped.

Traffic to Chardham tourist circuit comprising Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines was also affected due to landslides at a number of places, they said.

Rain poured heavily in parts of Rajasthan with Chittorgarh receiving the maximum rainfall of 128 mm followed by Churu which got 69 mm of rains.

An evening downpour in Jaipur caused water-logging in several areas disrupting traffic.

Heavy rain lashed a few places in Haryana and Punjab as well causing the mercury to drop by a few notches. Chandigarh and its surrounding areas of Panchkula and Mohali received a heavy downpour in the morning.

The maximum in Chandigarh settled at 30.7 deg C, Met office here said.

Rain also lashed Sonepat, Ambala, Karnal and a few other places in Haryana. Ambala, which received heavy rain, recorded a maximum of 30.5 deg C, down by two notches while the high at Karnal settled at 30 deg C.

Situation improving

Situation in Haryana's flood-hit Yamunanagar district improved as water levels in the Western Yamuna Canal reduced by over 67,000 cusecs on Sunday, senior officials said here.

The water level, which had risen to 90,000 cusecs on Saturday, was down to 23,000 cusecs on Sunday.

“There is no cause to panic. The water discharge is down considerably after we opened both the western and eastern ends of the canal,” Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sangwan said.

There had been no heavy rainfall in the district since Saturday noon though there have been some intermittent showers and the situation is improving.

In Punjab, Amritsar, which received light rains, recorded a high of 32.6 deg C, down by one degree.

Patiala recorded a rainfall of 13 mm while Ludhiana, which received light rains, recorded a high of 30.7 deg C, down by three notches.

In Uttar Pradesh while a child was killed and his mother injured after roof of their house collapsed in Mahauli area of Sitapur district, one death was reported from Bijnore.

According to Central Water Commission reports the water level of the Ganga is rising in Fatehgarh, Gumtiya (Kannauj), Kanpur Dehat, Dalmau, Ballia and Ghazipur.

The Yamuna is also swelling in Mathura, Auraiya and Hamirpur, while river Gomti is rising in Sultanpur and Jaunpur.

Sharda is flowing above the danger mark in Palliakalan in Kheri, whereas Ghagra is flowing almost at the danger level at Elgin Bridge in Barabanki and Ayodhya (Faizabad), they said.

According to the report Moradabad received the maximum rainfall of 92.4 mm in the last 24 hours, followed by Bareilly which received 37 mm of it.

Though water levels in Ganga and Yamuna in Uttarakhand dropped below the danger mark, the Upper Ganga canal at Haridwar remained closed due to which two power projects at Mohamadpur and Pathari were shut down. -- PTI
