A funny take on sibling rivalry

Sakudumbam Syamala

Director Radhakrishnan Mangalath's Sakudumbam Syamala

tells the story of an over-ambitious woman, Syamala (Urvashi).

Scripted by Krishna Poojappura, the movie portrays the feud between a brother and sister and her tricks to gain publicity in society.

Syamala married Vasu (Sai Kumar), a teacher at a private coaching centre, against the wishes of her family. So, her brother, Sekharan (Nedumudi Venu), a District Collector, who stays nearby, keeps his distance from her. They do not see eye to eye and always pick up a quarrel. She dreams of getting her son, Akash (Kunchako Boban), married to a U.S.-settled Indian family. She hopes to raise her own social status that way and show off in front of her brother.

Kollankavu Pappan (Suraj Venjaramoodu), a politician, wants to get an Assembly seat. He stage-manages strikes for this purpose. During one such strike, Syamala happens to pass by. She is not able to go through the police cordon and the fracas. Pappan grabs his opportunity. He goes to her side and poses before TV channels to show how an ordinary woman was beaten up by the police. The news spreads like wildfire and Syamala becomes a celebrity overnight. Pappan tries to cash in on her popularity but in vain. The party decides to field Syamala as its official candidate. She wins the election, defeating a hardcore communist sympathiser (Balachandran Chullikkad). Syamala becomes the Revenue Minister.

Now, Shekharan is in a fix. He has to welcome her. She creates all sorts of troubles for him. Sekharan knows that his sister is being used by others for their advantage. It is just then that she lands herself in a soup. She gets involved in a land scam and is forced to resign. Back home, she is faced with fresh problems. Her son wants to marry a reporter. Her attempts to thwart the alliance misfire. And she leaves home, having lost everything in life. Urvashi and Suraj Venjaramoodu score above the rest. The cast includes Bhama, Anup Chandran, Joby and Sanoj.

K.J. Yesudas amazes with Vilicho…, penned by Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma and tuned by M.G. Sreekumar. The film is produced by S. Gopakumar for Kunjuveettil Creations.
