Last date for filing IT returns extended

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended to August 4 the last date for filing of income tax returns.

An official release issued here on Sunday said that the date was extended in view of some technical snags in the e-filing system and inclement weather at various locations.

At Aayakar Bhavan here, the Income Tax department had received 1.36 lakh returns till July 31 through 40 special counters, besides 40,000 returns filed by assessees through special counters opened in different parts of the city.

As many as 1,78,218 assessees had made use of the special counters opened at Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Salem, Puducherry, Tambaram and Vellore.

“The exact number of e-returns will be announced soon,” said an IT official.
