Chennai: The third and last day of round five of the TNCA I division league matches saw Vijay CC and Globe Trotters register outright wins, here on Sunday. The effort of the day came elsewhere, however, as Malolan Rangarajan snared eight wickets in Alwarpet's second innings to take his match tally to eleven, on a day in which Young Stars ensured that they did not let slip the advantage of the first innings lead. R. Srinivasan stroked his way to eighty for Alwarpet in the drawn match. In an encounter whose balance wasn't decided until the final day, a crucial seventh-wicket association between Ashwin Venkatraman (74) and M.P. Rajesh (59 n.o.) handed Aruna a three-run first innings lead against IOB. Starting the day 102 runs behind with four wickets in hand, Aruna managed to turn the contest around, pocketing five points for having gone ahead in the first essay. India Pistons did not let Indian Bank's big first innings total (413 for nine decl.) deter it as it went on to overhaul it with the loss of just five wickets, thanks in main to opener R. Prashanth (113). Contributions came in from across the batting line-up with Martin Sanjeev (80), M.R. Srinivas (51), Thabaarak Baik (69 n.o.) and Ganapathi Chandrashekar (41 n.o.) chipping in. Hemang Badani pressed on from his overnight score of 97 to notch up an unbeaten 156 as Grand Slam chose to consolidate on its first innings lead in the match against Jolly Rovers. After declaring at 413, Grand Slam gave itself 69 overs to bowl Rovers out, but could prise out only four wickets — all of which were picked up by Suresh Kumar — as the match ended in a draw.
