dated August 3, 1960: Refugees for Tibet

As many as 2,435 Tibetan refugees have entered India between February and May 1960, the Prime Minister informed the Lok Sabha on August 1. Mr. Nehru said the total expenditure incurred by the Government on relief and rehabilitation of these refugees during 1959-60 was Rs. 41.59,614. The extent of assistance provided by private institutions was not known. Tibetan refugees had entered through various passes on the northern frontier into NEFA, U.P., Ladakh, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh. The local authorities had been requested to find employment for the refugees in their areas.
