Kozhikode
Kozhikode: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said that the opening of the Malaparamba-Ramanattukara bypass, known as the Kozhikode bypass, has helped to spur development activities in the stretch connecting the city to the south-eastern suburban side. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the proposed rural apparel park being developed by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) at North Karassery, Thiruvambadi, in the district on Tuesday. (The park is the first of five such parks planned to be developed by Kinfra at various locations in the State.) Mr. Karim said the bypass had facilitated the process of setting up of several major projects such as the two cyber parks, one in the government sector and the second being developed by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society and the Advanced Knowledge Park. The creation of infrastructure was necessary for the overall development of the State, he said. The Minister said the State government was committed to encouraging industries in rural areas so as to generate employment in the region. These initiatives would assist especially the womenfolk belonging to the deprived sections of society. For the past four years, the government had taken steps to establish several ventures that would ultimately provide employment to the jobless. Nearly 32 sick units in the public sector were now making profits. The Advanced Technology Park would generate employment to 25,000 persons when completed, Mr. Karim said. He said the government aimed at promoting industries without damaging the environment. However, the participation of the private sector was inevitable in developing infrastructure facilities and other projects. George M. Thomas, MLA, presided over the function.
