A boon for rail commuters to Tumkur

Anil Kumar Sastry and Nagesh Prabhu

Change in schedule of Golgumbaz Express benefits hundreds of daily commuters

There was no train from Bangalore to Tumkur between 6.20 p.m. and 9.10 p.m.

BANGALORE: Commuters from Bangalore to Tumkur now can reach home early with South Western Railway advancing the departure time of the Golgumbaz Express to 7.45 p.m. from 9.10 p.m.

The decision comes in the wake of a complaint by commuters that there was no train from Bangalore to Tumkur between 6.20 p.m. (Bangalore-Arsikere Passenger) and 9.10 p.m. (Golgumbaz Express), leaving most of the office-goers stranded.

The recent doubling of the railway track between Bangalore and Tumkur had brought no relief as no new trains were introduced. Commuters had demanded the introduction of a passenger train or at least advancing the departure time of the Golgumbaz Express.

The journey between these two cities (69 km) takes about one-and-a-half hours by passenger train and about an hour by express train. In contrast, the bus journey takes more than two hours.

Convenient

H. Shanmukhappa, a government employee who regularly commutes from Tumkur to Bangalore, said the changed schedule of the Golgumbaz Express, which has eight general second-class coaches, has helped hundreds of regular commuters who now reach Tumkur at 8.40 p.m.

Vishwa Aradhya, an architect with an office in Bangalore who commutes between the two cities daily, said that in the morning people had to travel by bus to Bangalore if they missed the 7.20 a.m. Golgumbaz Express. The train now leaves at 8.15 a.m., reaching Yeshwanthpur around 9.15 a.m.
