Arul Senthil maintains winning streak

TIRUCHI: The thrill of checkmating opponents across the chequered board surfaced in ample measure among contestants of the chess championship hosted by the Bishop Heber College (BHC) here recently.

Making winning a habit, B. Arul Senthil of BHC emerged the Bharathidasan University chess champion for the third successive year.

The two-day championship held as part of the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate sports extravaganza, spread over five months, saw participation of 70 students from 35 colleges.The top six – B. Arul Senthil, V.L. Anandh Babu (Urumu Dhanalakshmi College), R. Lakshmikanth (JJ College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai), J. Mohammed Habeeb Hussain (Kurinji College of Arts and Science), J. Mohammed Iqbal (H.H. The Rajah's College, Pudukottai), V. Naresh Kumar (BHC) – will represent Bharathidasan University in the inter-university chess tournament. At the valediction, P. Mariayyah former head, Department of Physical Education, Bharathidasan University, gave away prizes in the presence of L.C. John, director of Physical Education, BHC.

Affiliated colleges from eight districts – Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Karur and Tiruvarur – are to take part in more than 20 inter-collegiate sports events of the university for both men and women.

“We can expect some thrilling contests. These tournaments are an opportunity for youngsters to showcase their skills,” said the head, Department of Physical Education of the university, K. Chandrasekaran.He lauded the medal winners in various events at the inter-university tournaments last year. Mr. Chandrasekaran was hopeful that the students would set higher benchmarks this year.
