KANCHEEPURAM: Eight persons, including a child, died in an accident involving a car and a heavy vehicle near here on Wednesday morning. Seven others, including four children, sustained injuries in the accident. According to police, the collision took place over a canal at 6.30 a.m. on the Kancheepuram-Arakonam Road. The car driver, Nagaraj, and seven others, including 8-year-old Sandhya, were killed on the spot. The victims, including Rajanna, Sivappa, Janakiraman, Rupa, Rani and Savithri, all residents of Naguvan hamlet, near Huskur in Kolar district, Karnataka, left their hamlet on August 3 evening for Tiruttani in the car belonging to Nagaraj's friend. Sindhu (9), Sayithra (8) and Ranjitha (6) and Kushma (8) sustained head injuries and Santhamma, Thulasiram and Krishna sustained multiple injuries. They were referred to the Government General Hospital, Chennai. The group was bound for Kancheepuram after offering prayers at Tiruttani on the eve of ‘Aadi Krithigai.' The lorry driver, Mahendran of Cheyyar, who abandoned the vehicle, surrendered at the Kancheepuram taluk police station.
