Syed Ahmed memorial hockey from tomorrow

CHENNAI: Fourteen teams — nine from the city and five from the districts — will take part in the second edition of the Indian Overseas Bank-Syed Ahmed memorial State-level hockey tournament to be held at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here from August 6 to 15.

Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, Reehan Ahmed, Organising Secretary, hoped that the second edition would bring in crowds like the first one. “Due to the overwhelming response to the tournament last year, the Tournament Committee has decided to go a step ahead and conduct a State-level tournament. We thank our sponsor IOB and other co-sponsors,” he said.

Mohd Abdul Nabi, Tournament Director, said it would be a knock-out cum league system.

“From August 6 to 10, it will be knock-out, followed by semifinal league from August 11 to 13. August 14th is a rest day,” Nabi said. The tournament carries a prize money of Rs. 50,000 and the runner-up takes home Rs. 30,000. — Special Correspondent
