Saina tops Super Series rankings

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Saina Nehwal is now World No.1 as per the latest Super Series rankings of the Badminton World Federation.

There are three categories of World rankings as per the BWF — firstly there is the overall ranking (as per which Saina is currently World No.2), secondly there is the head-to-head ranking, and then there is the Super Series ranking.

Saina figured in four of the six tournaments played this year so far, reaching the semifinals at the All England championships, the quarterfinal at the Malaysian Open and then winning the Singapore Open and the Indonesian Open Super Series titles to collect 29,860 points.

Korea's Youn Joo Bae, who has played all six tournaments, is No. 2 on the Super Series rankings with 28,680 points.

Interestingly, the current World No.1 in overall rankings, Wang Yihan, does not even figure in the top 10 of the Super Series. With 17,820 points from three Super Series appearances this year, the Chinese girl is only at No.12.

Saina, who seemed pleasantly surprised at her ascension to No.1, said: “This is big news to me. I just can't believe that I am the World No. 1!”

“Coming ahead of the World Championship, this is a huge morale-booster and should, naturally, mean more expectations too,” she said.
