SIVAKASI: An eight-year-old boy, K. Aravindan, was killed in a fire accident reportedly at an illegal cracker unit functioning in a house near here on Thursday. Searches conducted by the revenue and police officials on Wednesday and Thursday resulted in seizure of crackers, illegally manufactured at a few houses, worth Rs. 2.5 lakh. The boy sustained 90 per cent burns following the accident that occurred at the house in West Kothainachiyarpuram at around 8 p.m. Karuppasamy, father of the boy, had admitted him to the Governmenthospital here claiming that he was injured in a stove burst. The victim succumbed to injuries at around 4 a.m. on Thursday. However, based on a tip-off from the local people, the Sivakasi Tahsildar, T.R.D. Shanthi, inspected the house. “They had destroyed the evidence by washing the house. However, we found some chemicals settled on utensils. Besides, we were able to smell chemicals inside the house.” Officials seized a van-load of illegally manufactured crackers. The van owner and the driver were arrested by the Vembakottai police. Meanwhile, illegally manufactured crackers stored in three houses were also seized.
