Shutters down: Buyers went missing at Azadpur Mandi, touted as the largest vegetable and fruit market in Asia, in the Capital on Thursday as wholesale traders observed strike.

NEW DELHI: Traders at the Azadpur fruit and vegetables market organised a protest strike here on Thursday against the levying of 6 per cent commission on buyers, thus increasing the cost of fruits and vegetables by 15-20 per cent in the city.

Roughly 5,000 traders at the Azadpur Mandi and the Okhla Mandi, which is a sub-yard of Azadpur, did not work as part of their day-long strike.

Commission on buyers

According to the Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Traders' Chamber president Metharam Kriplani, the strike was organised to protest against a recent order by the Delhi Administration. The order directed traders to impose a 6 per cent commission on buyers including retailers and consumers instead of charging the amount from growers outside Delhi.

He further alleged that the move had been made without consulting the traders.

“We usually work on a commission basis and take commission from growers outside Delhi for selling their produce here. But according to the order of the Delhi Government, we will have to charge the commission from the buyers. This is not fair on them. In 22 other States, the commission is taken from growers. Things should not change for us,” Mr. Kriplani said, adding the problem had cropped up because of a petition by Himachal Pradesh.

The chamber appealed to the Delhi Government to rationally decide on the levy of commission keeping in view the interests of traders and consumers.

Close to 8,000 buyers visit the Azadpur Mandi which is the central point for fruits and vegetables supplies in the Capital and transactions worth about Rs. 20 crore take place daily.
