Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) had identified a total of three Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) and nine Individual Effluent Treatment Plants (IETPs) here with the violation of government norms pertaining to zero liquid discharge in the dyeing process. This breach came to light during a random surprise check conducted by TNPCB officials led by its member secretary R. Ramachandran at dyeing units, CETPs and IETPs in Tirupur cluster on Friday. The zero liquid discharge in the dyeing process had become mandatory following a Supreme Court directive to protect River Noyyal and other water bodies from getting polluted by the lethargic discharge of effluents. TNPCB District Environmental Engineer R. Kannan told The Hindu that a report on the inspection would be submitted to the pollution control board corporate office in Chennai soon for necessary action against the erred units. Pilot plant Mr. Kannan said that the Board had taken the initiative now to set up a pilot plant embedded with chillers and steam ejectors on Arulpuram CETP premises on Friday to demonstrate to the dyeing unit owners how to recover salt in the effluent treatment process and thereby ensure zero discharge.
