CHENNAI: A three-day expo on hospital equipment opened at the Chennai Trade Centre here on Friday, with rehabilitation equipment for persons with disability as its focus. Inaugurating the fifth edition of ‘Medicall 2010', Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor Mayil Vahanan Natarajan said that with the country drawing people for medical tourism, several healthcare equipment are being manufactured indigenously. They are good in quality, cost-effective than the imports and reaching out to more people. This trend would continue for the next 10 years, he said. A wheel chair lift, deluxe wheel chair, stand-up wheel chair and staircase lift are some of the indigenously manufactured equipment on display. Until a few years ago, even the tyre of the wheel chair was imported. That has changed now and we have companies manufacturing various aid and equipment locally, a senior executive of a company showcasing all-terrain electric wheel chairs at the expo. Mobile ambulances fitted with all life-saving equipment, an open incubator designed to address infection, beds, surgical instruments are among other products on display. Medicall 2010 is open only for medical professionals. A total of 350 exhibitors are participating in the expo, some of them from other countries. A. Muruganathan, Governing Council Member of the university, said an international seminar on molecular lab and a workshop on cost-cutting in hospitals would be held as part of the exhibition.
