BHUBANESWAR: National Aluminium Company Limited, leading manufacturer of alumina and aluminium, has reported the highest-ever metal production of 4.31 lakh tonnes in the financial year 2009-10 against the previous best of 3.61 lakh tonnes achieved in 2008-09, with an increase of 14.4 per cent. According to a Nalco release, the company achieved a record production of 15.92 lakh tonnes of alumina hydrate with capacity utilisation of 101.05 per cent against the previous year level of 15.77 lakh tonnes. Similarly, power generation has also increased to 6,295 MU from 5,541 MU achieved in the year 2008-09. “Despite global recession, when many companies around the world were resorting to production cuts, NALCO not only kept its operation at optimal level, but also surged ahead with second phase expansion in order to leverage its advantage of low cost production and anticipated increase in demand for metal in domestic market,” the company said. There was, however, dip in profit margin. According to the audited financial results for the year 2009-10, the company posted a net profit of Rs.814.22 crore against the previous year's figure of Rs.1,272.27 crore. Similarly, sales turnover was estimated to be Rs.5310.47 crore against Rs.5,531.06 crore achieved during the previous year. Although production volume increased, the lower profit was mainly due to decrease in sales realisation because of lower LME prices and higher fuel costs, Nalco argued.
