AHEAD OF THE REST:Sidhanth Thingalaya left his competitors and the record of Krishna Mohan behind in the 110m hurdles.

PATIALA: Sidhanth Thingalaya, a 19-year-old Maharashtra athlete, bettered the National record in the 110-metre hurdles in the 50th National inter-State athletics championships at the NIS Complex here on Saturday. The tall, bespectacled Thingalaya continued his good run in the season, with a timing of 13.81 seconds that bettered the two-year-old National record of K. Krishna Mohan of Andhra. Krishna Mohan, incidentally, has been absent from the circuit this season.

The Maharashtra athlete, a second year B.Com student at Mithibai College, Mumbai, had earlier this season won the silver in the Asian junior meet in Hanoi, Vietnam, clocking a personal best 13.96s. Thingalaya missed the Commonwealth Games qualification mark by a hundredth of a second. “I dont know whether I have made it,” he said about his qualification immediately after the race. Since the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has decided to enter at least one athlete in every event, irrespective of the criterion, he can be assured of a place in the Indian team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

Gayathri Govindaraj was not at her best in the women's 100-metre hurdles. She won untroubled, building up a five-metre lead by the half-way mark and putting in everything over the last two hurdles. But the 19-year-old Tamil Nadu girl's timing of 13.71s fell well short of her National junior record of 13.59s which she clocked in the heats of the World junior championships in Moncton, Canada, last month.

Meet record for Preeja

Preeja Sreedharan clocked a meet record of 32:36.53 while beating her arch-rival Kavita Raut in the women's 10,000 metres. Kavita also came under her own previous meet record of 34:23.80 timed in 2007. Shockingly paced by Sunita over the last 200 metres, the women's 1500m runners still clocked ordinary timings. Sunita stopped running into the second lap and then resumed with 200 metres to go to the finish, much against rules.

Winner Sushma Devi was boxed by O. P.Jaisha and she finished the race in the third lane. Jaisha, who finished second, was disqualified for receiving assistance. Chatholi Hamza, competing in only his second race of the season, after having suffered a stress fracture on his right leg, and recovering for six months this season, was beaten by Sandeep Karan Singh in the men's 1500 metres. Sandeep clocked 3:43.99 as against the CWG qualifying mark of 3:43.00.
